'Alleviation'
Digitally-manipulated photographic image printed on rag paper of large-scale green flame bonfire with 200 confession boxes placed on fallen trees.

ARTIST STATEMENT

‘Alleviation’ is an alternate response to my IA2 performative installation work that documented the burning of 200 confession boxes containing secrets from invited participants that, if revealed, could possibly destroy reputations. Fire is usually representative of destruction and torture, however, the altered reading of this digitally-manipulated apocalyptic image with a green flame, symbolically represents “the most powerful healing fire…helping to overcome addictions and bad habits,” ("Church-of-the-divine-spirit – green-fire," n.d.). Influenced by Conceptual art, this contemporary contextual work contemplates the idea that the green fire is metaphorically releasing and healing past transgressions, inviting audiences to engage with this process of forgiveness.
