ARTIST STATEMENT

My own experience as a woman lead me to believe that women are united by disadvantage (gender inequality). Women come together to help each other through these tough times, mothers, daughters and sisters. Which led to question, does motherhood unite all women? My approach to “An arrangement of disadvantages” was inspired by the poem woman to Man by Judith Wright it describes the fear and disadvantage women have to go through in and preparing for mother hood: ‘The blind head butting at the dark, the blaze of light along the blade. Oh hold me, for I am afraid.’ My piece challenges the poem and questions how women can be united by motherhood and if the daunting experience unites us even more? The vibrant colours and flowers in my piece represent my aesthetic and the different emotions and new beginnings that women may face during motherhood.
