STRESS HEAD
Ripped up paper assessment task sheets attached to a clay sculpture of a screaming face.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Academic failure is almost every senior’s greatest fear. It’s what propels students to confront every assignment, exam, and presentation, but also keeps us in a constant state of panic; this was the direction of my work in the piece ‘Stress Head’. Taking inspiration from artists Marcel Duchamp, whose style makes use of ready made items; the task sheets, as well as Michelangelo with the inclusion of a human figure. ‘Stress Head’ juxtaposes the classic medium of traditional sculpture with the contemporary use of text and symbolic imagery, found in Dadaism, to expose the intimidating, high expectations of school life.
