Three Ceramic slip cast taxidermy pet dogs critiquing the value humans place on animals.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Death is an inevitable fate that awaits all life, and can push people to find ways of preserving it. My work is inspired by taxidermy. Taxidermies, while many are based on fact, can be inspired by fiction. My body of work is inspired by artist Olivia Simpson, and her use of taxidermy as a means to question societal norms, and the value we place on animals. Perpetuated Memories is a collection of three dimensional artworks focusing on the question, “Why do people care for animals?” My work explores how and why people instinctively care for animals, which can sometimes be valued more than gold.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Slip cast, fired to bisque, then fur covered to represent different values humans place on animals.
