ARTIST STATEMENT

In the creation of this work, I was influenced by artists Ryo Shimizu and Wolfgang Stiller. Conveying ideas of beauty, complexity, chaos, imperfection and being burnt out, their works that utilised matches inspired my piece. I wanted to contrast the perfect and beautiful, with the chaos and complexity, whilst also considering the idea of being burnt out.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I began with the dark background, moving inwards using a dry brush technique. This piece was inspired by Wolfgang Stiller. I wanted the matchstick to be intimidating and abnormally oversized, yet still being somewhat realistic and detailed.
