Melting Moment Installation
Series of Photographic Images x 2. Still life with objects, rocks.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Decay is a fundamental process of the world we live in. Melting Moment explores the ephemeral characteristics of nature and the temporality of each passing moment. The digitally manipulated photographs of Protea flowers create a flowing, abstract scenery that is reminiscent of the ice hand sculptures which are constantly at a different phase of their ‘life.’ These fluid components correspond to the concept of change and transience over time. The human skull and open hands are a reminder of our own mortality, and hint at the part humans have played in the decay of the natural world.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The student created Part A by making a skull out of 3D pen. They took photos of flowers, which they then digitally manipulated. They created a still life with the objects. Part B was created by freezing water into hand shapes and assembling smooth black rocks. The frozen hands were placed on the rocks then photographed through various stages of melting. The photographs were printed to make a background for second pair of ice hands. These ice hands were placed on top of rocks as part of the installation and melted. (this last section would not be included in CG)
