ARTIST STATEMENT

18 represents the adulteration of nature’s beauty due to human-caused pollution throughout my lifetime. The sky’s diseased metamorphosis is encapsulated by the transformation of ghostly blue to suffocating black: a familiar sight in my home, China. Gold and silver, the metonym of wealth and fortune in Chinese culture, intertwines with the corrupted black to reflect that the bankruptcy of the natural world is intrinsically linked with humans’ craving for wealth. This tragic transformation mirrors the human experience: we were born pure but are inexorably tainted with greed and selfishness. The emerging toxins will one day consume what was

ARTWORK PROCESS

The student has created 18 individual abstract paintings using carefully applied alcohol ink onto yupo paper, building layers of colour and form. The works transition from pure blue to black, gold and silver, representing increasing levels of toxicity in the air.
