Trailing Light into the Darkness Photograph

ARTIST STATEMENT

Light often symbolises truth because it brings into focus that which cannot ordinarily be seen. Nature’s secrets are left behind for the comfort of looming dark clouds enveloping a city at sunset irradiated by the long exposures of road trains and rushing traffic. We fail to see the tranquility behind the light, focusing our attention on speeding towards a hope for solace in the lighted chaos of a grotesque city. We are mesmerised by the speed and allure of light, the promise of a bright and unsettling future, and therefore miss the tranquility and beauty of the landscape.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Photographs were taken with long exposure in a range of different locations from the city to rural spaces. The stark contrast of the moody sky as opposed to the sunset lit colours evoke a feeling of following into the unknown darkness. By under-exposing the background in the natural landscape it demonstrates this idea of the unknown and darkness of the natural world that we fear. Through experimenting with aperture and ISO settings in the outback and the city, I was able to capture the sunset without over-exposing the light trails.
