1 minute digital projection installation including sculpture. Time-based digital media and clay sculpture

ARTIST STATEMENT

This artwork focuses on the invisibility of mental illness, and how external appearances often mask the condition of one’s mental state. Inspired by contemporary artist Daniel Crooks, exploring a similar fluidity of distortion whilst utilising a photocopier to abstract images. This method allowed me to portray two mental illnesses which often aren’t seen in external appearances, Insomnia and Dissociative Identity Disorder, as well as my own mental state whilst creating this artwork. This video is juxtaposed by a small clay sculpture which distorts the raw video footage of the three figures when projected onto it.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Video created using distorted images produced by hand manipulating photocopies of portraits. Abstract ceramic human forms were created to project a smaller video over, which distorts the perfect projected forms.
