Immortal Natura Costume Design
Capricorn Caves inspired wearable art exploring the strength of native flora that adapted and thrives in this dry arid environment.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My experience at the Capricorn Caves inspired Immortal Natura. The artwork is a representation of the drought-stricken landscape focusing on the strength of native flora. The handprinted Ficus Viren Fig Tree leaves cover the skirt, its lengthy roots reaching the ground. The dry twigs form a medici collar to show the regal power of Mother Nature constantly adapting to stay alive. The illumination under the skirt is difficult to see in daylight but when viewed in darkness it comes to life representing the plants unique ability to stay dormant, until more favourable conditions allow it to flourish once more.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The process of creation started with carving a silk cut lino block of a Ficus Viren leaf. This image was hand printed over 100 times. These leaves were glued onto a tissue paper armature of an evening dress, then layered with twine and sticks on the skirt. The top was created by dabbing lino ink onto leaf shaped paper using gladwrap then assembled. More painted sticks were added to the top resembling a sash representing that nature always wins. The battery operated fairy lights were secured under the skirt and when turned on highlighting that it is still living inside.
