As identifying as transgender, differing from social norms, I feel homophobia and transphobia alike have been inherently ingrained into the teachings of religion, political groups and cultures. My drawings explore the fear, anxiety, depression and sometimes danger LGBTI+ individuals experience throughout different ethnic backgrounds/religions. Each drawing portrays a random individual from differing backgrounds. The brightly coloured flowers against the lead pencil tonal work serve as a jarring clash between the harshness of coming out and the nature of the LQGBTQI+ community. The use of nature conveys my belief that a person's sexual orientation or gender identification is natural.
Created the back story. Researching the style of face and the pose most appropriate for the concept. Practice the pastel work and the tonal work for the pencil. Starting from the nose I worked to the eyes and out across the rest of the face, improvising.
