Three A4 resin multimedia drawings on tracing paper displayed behind PVC venetian blind. Pencil, white acrylic paint, resin, rice paper.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In Honne-Tatemae culture, one’s true self is repressed to conform to societal norms. Crushed by sociocultural expectations, contemporary recluses, Hikikomori, withdraw from community contact. The lively neon cityscape pieces, symbolic of the compliant façades worn in public, along with the text prints of Japanese conduct, glitch across monochromatic drawings referencing each Hikikomori’s hobbies and homes. Unseen illustrates the forcible corrosion of our true, ‘black-and-white’ selves to fit into society’s ideals. Reflective of how Japanese people in the past were required to meet with a screen between them, the drawings are displayed behind venetian blinds, inviting audience dialogue.

ARTWORK PROCESS

To personalize this phenomena, I took news photos and materialized into imagery the knowledge I learnt online about the Hikikomori, and with this in mind, I used Photoshop to abstract these into three different compositions. These Photoshop references were drawn on tracing paper with pencil. Manipulated Japanese cityscape imagery was printed onto tracing paper and encased with resin, then cut into rectangular shapes and reconstructed to represent 3D neon structures. I carved lino and printed meaningful Japanese text onto paper in varying degrees of density. Finally, I layered and collaged all these components like glitches across each drawing using resin.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Queena Yuen

Contemporary issues I have observed in news articles or on TV have greatly influenced my art approach. I find interest in how values and expectations for the individual differ cross-culturally, and how these imposed rules govern and influence our identities and the way we act. Because of different experiences, beliefs and values of people, issues at a glance are often misunderstood. Because of this, I seek to create works that establish understanding and awareness between people and difficult topics. In art, I believe the self-discovery and interpretation process is crucial towards establishing a deeper understanding of our world and others.
