ARTIST STATEMENT
This piece was created to explore the intricate details and elements involved in indigenous Australian art. Personally, I believe indigenous Australian artworks are not celebrated enough and are rarely seen on display. This culture inspired me through aboriginal people’s strong use of symbols and storytelling in paintings. I also find the common use colours derived from their surroundings very resourceful and inspiring as art can be created from the rawest of materials and adds a strong feeling of connection to culture. In my piece I created a landscape of canyons and water with implementation of aboriginal painting styles.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I began with research into Indigenous Australian culture, patterns, colours and designs and created three concept drawings. I chose my final design because I liked the way a landscape can look from a birds-eye view using traditional Indigenous colours and patterns. I used acrylic paint and a final lacquer to seal the board to enhance the colours and patterns. I have done previous research and artworks on Indigenous culture, so this inspired me to create an artwork based on Indigenous artistic processes.
