Family Sculpture
Hebel, mirror and 19 hand molded resin horses

ARTIST STATEMENT

Family relationships are vital to shaping our identity. In their own herd, fragile horses become stronger together, creating an environment of unity and protection. Acting as a portal, the mirror affirms this theme of family and self-identity by reflecting the view into the horses’ undisrupted world. The imperfections of each horse depict an individual, separate from the whole. The abstract landscape illustrates an environment where unity and magic collide, capturing the utopian world in which horses have imprinted their own identity. The smaller groups of horses refer to individual relationships, encouraging the audience to connect to their own social hierarchy

ARTWORK PROCESS

The sculpture was constructed using resin, hebel and mirror. Horses were created using a silicone mould which was filled with different coloured resin. Snorkels had to be created from small electric wires in order to allow air to escape the head and tail. Hebel was carved to create the form of a cliff, a natural environment for the horses which connects to the context. Long panels of glass were used to block off areas so that resin could be poured into the cracks. Mirror was used to created reflections and allow the viewer to see different viewpoints.
