A Mothers Love Installation
Ten circular embroidery hoops, screen-printed and embellished, linked by string with lights

ARTIST STATEMENT

This work explores the generational progression of mental health issues and showcases the idea of trauma. String is symbolic of the fragile connection between child and parent and hangs from the fingertip of each hand as though it is a transferal of DNA. Contrast has been established between warm and cool colours, and the juxtaposition of black and white. Individually screen printed brain scans represent different mental illness, which include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and OCD. The artwork is intended to start conversation about mental health and the psychological effects of living with someone from suffers from it.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Inspired by research conducted relating to brain stimulation within people who suffer from mental illness. This led to my focus of 'generational progression of mental disorders.' Personal context led to exploration of Andy Warhol's screen printings of Marilyn Monroe, who was subjected to mental deterioration throughout her childhood. White reflects clinical and institutionalized healthcare. Juxtaposed by the vibrant colours of brain activity. Lights that line the outside of the brain emulated the MRI scan. They are a representation of the constant high-intensity-neurons that are fired throughout the brain.
