Layering of multiple panelled drawings suspended from bamboo frame

ARTIST STATEMENT

Developing connections to places is an essential human experience, and our perception of place is layered with memories and relationships. Life in Layers is a panoramic depiction of my parents’ bedroom, a shared space of family connection. The hanging pieces communicate the dimensions of the room and transparent paper incorporates the effects of light, shadow, and movement in the space. Details fade into outlines and those with emotional significance are portrayed in hyper-realistic colour, drawing the audience into the physical space. The connection I feel to my family and my home invites the viewer to reflect on shared spaces.

ARTWORK PROCESS

A bamboo frame was built to suspend and layer the drawing panels in a panoramic perspective of the room that communicates the depth and dimension of the physical space. Transparent paper was used to emphasise the layered effect of the work to incorporate the dynamic effects of light, movement and shadow. The drawing style is hyper-realistic, using colour and detail to signify personal and emotional significance, while background objects and details fade into pencil outlines.
