ARTWORK DETAILS

Sophie Hopsick Clayfield College (Clayfield)
Juicy Acrylic painting and embroidery on canvas.
Three white canvasses with embroidered fruit on them.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I painted a pop style image of three different common fruits and then decoratively embroided into the canvas with a gritty, scrumbling stitch style. I am testing boundaries and exploring controversy. I have played with the relationship of text and imagery to create double meanings that pursue notions of perception and association referencing gender stereotypes, objectification, patronisation and provocation. I used embroidery as it is a female process to embellish the femininity in my otherwise ambiguous subject matter. My work uses you, my audience, your experience or innocence to activate meaning. Fruit or genitalia? Innocent or controversial?

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sophie Hopsick

Growing up with a specific love for music and art which I inherited from my grandmother, I have always been a very creative person. I love channelling my creativity and passion into different areas, finding new ways and ideas to approach challenges every day. I think my ‘chaotic creativity’ is definitely defined by the state of my bedroom, as it seems to never not be messy! I have an expanding rock collection, and love gathering and collecting small quirky trinkets. (Not a hoarder!)
