ARTIST STATEMENT

Tribue represents consumerism and the fast fasion industry . I am interested in how this industry exploits women in the developing world to make disposable garments for women in the first world. In 2013 the extent of this exploitation was laid bare with the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh. The three panels pay homage to the 1134 lives lost. The paper and denim flowers represent the vulnerability and resilience of those who work in this industry. They also act as a universal symbol of feminity, and sorrow for the predominantly women workers whose lives were lost.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I made as series of sculptural flowers from upcycled fabrics and tissue paper. These were assembled around a foam ball and then photogrpahed.
